Paco is now in Los Angeles, California, the state he has chosen for his last American adventure. Located on the west coast of the United States, it is the most populated state of the country. The four biggest and most important cities of California are Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and San Jose, being the first one Paco's current holiday destination.

Los Angeles is the biggest city in California, located on the southern coast and often referred to by its initials: L.A. What is now California first belonged to Spain, then it became part of Mexico and, finally, in 1848, part of the United States.

After having spent a few days in the freezing weather of Nunavut, Paco finds California really hot. Once he gets used to it again, he will enjoy the nice warm temperatures and the wonderful beaches of California. Last night Sonia reminded him not to miss one of these beaches, and she also asked him to send her a postcard.

L.A. is a very important business, entertainment, fashion and culture centre, partly due to the fact that it is the home base of Hollywood. This is the reason why L.A. is also known as the 'Entertainment Capital of the World'. It is, without any doubt, the world's leader in cinema, television and music. Whereas Hollywood is considered to be the home of film studios, Beverly Hills is the home of film stars. Paco wants to visit Hollywood, of course, but also the Chinese Theatre, the Kodak Theatre, some film and television studios, Beverly Hills or Disneyland.

While Paco is having breakfast at the hotel, he reads the following advertisement about L.A.:

Don't visit L.A. without our help! We organize trips to see this wonderful city and its surrounding areas. Visit Hollywood and its popular Walk of Fame. Find seats for interesting venues such as the taping of a gameshow. Don't miss the original Disneyland in Anaheim. You won't regret it! Come to Beverly Hills. We'll try to see some celebrities there. And sunbathe in Malibu wonderful beaches. Come to 'L.A. Travels' and book your trip with us!

To report what someone has said is to tell what that person has said, but not with the direct or exact words. When you report someone's words, we call it INDIRECT SPEECH. If you just provide the exact words someone has said, you are using DIRECT SPEECH:

Let's study the examples of REPORTED COMMANDS from the text:

Sonia reminded him not to miss one of these beaches. (INDIRECT SPEECH)

She also asked him to send her a postcard.(INDIRECT SPEECH)

Which were Sonia's original words?

Don't miss one of those beaches. (DIRECT SPEECH)

Send me a postcard.(DIRECT SPEECH)

Icono de iDevice Solved Exercise

We have seen through the previous examples that reported commands are very easy.

  • First of all, we need a reporting verb:

Sonia reminded him...

She also asked him...

  • Second, we put the verb in the infinitive with 'to'. In the negative form, we just have to add 'not' before the 'to-infinitive':
...not to miss...
...to send...
  • we also need to check if any other changes are necessary, for example, changes of the personal pronouns or expressions of time or space.

Sonia reminded him not to miss one of these beaches.------- Don't miss one of those beaches.
She also asked him to send her a postcard. ------- Send me a postcard.

What are the original words in this reported command? Be careful with all the changes you have to make.

She told us not to come so early to her party the following day.
