As you
know, Paco has been travelling around the UK and he has visited the Highlands
in topic 3. He has learned many things about Scotland and Scottish people that
he didn’t know before. Although he is not very keen on alcohol, he has heard
about Scotch Whisky. He has visited one of the numerous distilleries in the
Highlands open to the public and now he has learned interesting facts about this
drink.
Its origin
probably comes from the traditional Scottish thrift. Many centuries ago,
instead of wasting their extra barley, the farmers fermented and distilled it,
producing what they called in Gaelic ‘visge beatha’. This was whisky, but their
Gaelic words meant ‘Water of life’.
For
centuries, people in Scotland have been making whisky following more or less the
same technique. Scotch whisky is considered to be the best in the world. Why? Maybe
because of the quality of Highland water. That is why distilleries are often
located in remote areas near cool mountain streams. Other countries have tried
to produce whisky of the same quality with no success.
There are more than one hundred distilleries in Scotland. Its ‘Water of Life’ is the most successful export to the rest of the world.
