Llanfairpwllgwyngyll
This is the
short form for Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch,
the
longest place name in the United Kingdom and one of the longest in the world. It
is a village located in North Wales on the island of Anglesey.
The name
has 58 letters (51 in the Welsh alphabet where ‘ch’ and ‘ll’ are single
letters), and the translation into English would be ‘"St Mary's church in the hollow of the white
hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the church of St. Tysilio of the red
cave".
This long name was given in the 1860’s, invented to attract attention, as a publicity stunt. They wanted to have a reputation of having the longest name for a railway station in the UK. Nowadays, visitors normally stop at the train station to take a picture of the sign. Another typical tourist attraction is having a kind of passport stamped at a local shop with the name of the village.
Thousands of men, women, students and whole families visit each year this small village. For this reason, the local people of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll are very proud of their little village and its long name.
